Glittering launch of logo for ICC World Twenty20 2014 Bangladesh

April 6, 2013
Inspired by the unique painted rickshaws, which pack the streets of the Bangladesh cities, the logo for the ICC World Twenty20 2014 was unveiled on a star-studded evening in Dhaka tonight.
At a glittering gala shown live on television in Bangladesh - and in the presence of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Vice President AHM Mustafa Kamal and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan ? the logo for the tournament was launched exactly one year ahead of the tournament finals.
For the first time, 16 men's teams will compete for the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh 2014 alongside eight women's teams who include for the first time the hosts. The event will run from 16 March to 6 April 2014 and is scheduled to be played in four cities in Bangladesh ? Mirpur, Chittagong, Sylhet and Cox's Bazar.
The spectacular night featured popular Bangladesh artists Lubna Marium and her team Shadhona, singers Habib and Nancy as well as magician Jewel Aich and sand artist Kaushik Bose performing infront of a packed audience of more than 500 specially invited guests.
The focal point of the evening, compered by former Bangladesh cricket star and now renowned commentator Athar Ali Khan accompanied by Farah Sharmeen, was the unveiling of the event logo which uses the colours of the Bangladesh flag with splashes of blue which represents Bangladesh's iconic waterways (as well as being the ICC's own colour).

The T is made up of cricket stumps and the 0 in the T20 represents the cricket ball complete with Bangladeshi green seam while the white in the design lends an energetic, friendly and youthful feel to the logo.
Designed in Australia by design company WiteKite who also designed the ICC Cricket World Cup logo in 2011, the ICC World Twenty20 2012 Sri Lanka mark and the distinctive logo for the ICC Women's World Cup 2013 India.
ICC Vice President AHM Mustafa Kamal said: "The evening captured the sounds and colours of this beautiful country with a distinctively Bangladeshi logo and memorable launch event. I know that the BCB will work tirelessly in the next 12 months to ensure they help deliver a tournament that ICC, BCB, world cricket and the people of Bangladesh can be proud to be associated with.
"We have now less than 12 months to go to the start of the ICC World Twenty20 2014 and in that time I am certain that the excitement will build to fever pitch and the demand for tickets will outstrip even that of the wonderfully successful ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 in which Bangladesh was a joint host with India and Sri Lanka."

Tahir Foundation and Gates Foundation Announce Partnership to Advance Global Health

First objective is global initiative to end polio forever
Jakarta, April 25, 2013 – Dato Sri Dr. Tahir, chairman of the Tahir Foundation in Indonesia, and Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, announced that their foundations are entering into a partnership to improve the lives of the world’s poorest. The partnership commits a total of US$200 million over five years – US$100 million from each partner – toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
The initial focus of their collaboration is support of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s (GPEI) new Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan (2013-2018), designed to achieve a polio-free world by 2018. The comprehensive plan was developed to capitalize on the unprecedented opportunity to eradicate polio and is projected to cost $5.5 billion over six years. The Tahir Foundation is committing US$25 million to help fund the plan. As part of its overall commitment to polio eradication announced today, the Gates Foundation matched the pledge.
Dato Sri Dr. Tahir said: “Ending polio requires extraordinary partnerships between all sectors and global societies. We are thrilled to join the Gates Foundation and other partners in the effort to end this disease once and for all.”
Polio is a vaccine-preventable disease that can lead to paralysis or death. Due to tremendous advances in 2012, today there are the fewest number of polio cases in the fewest countries ever, creating a unique opportunity to end the disease forever. Polio now remains endemic in only three countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria – down from 125 in 1988.

“Working with partners like Dr. Tahir will increase our impact in achieving ambitious global health goals such as delivering a polio-free world,” said Gates. “Dr. Tahir’s generous commitment to support polio eradication demonstrates to the international community how we can come together to solve global challenges.”
Tahir and Gates signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Global Vaccine Summit held in Abu Dhabi. During the signing, Gates said that Tahir’s commitment to the people of Indonesia and to help the world's poorest communities made the Tahir Foundation a natural partner to achieve their mutual goals of ensuring that people are able to live healthy and productive lives.
The partnership with the Tahir Foundation represents the Gates Foundation’s first major private donor partnership in Indonesia and will expand the focus of its work in Indonesia. Additional areas of the partnership’s focus will be tuberculosis, malaria and HIV and family planning. The foundations agreed to share learnings and seek out opportunities to co-fund projects that will accelerate their mutual goals, as well as to encourage philanthropy from Asia and globally. The Gates Foundation has funded a number of programs in Indonesia, including its Global Libraries program.
Gates, a co-host of the Summit, recognized Tahir in opening remarks at the Summit, noting that Tahir is an important new donor in the fight against polio. Later, in a session about the new polio eradication plan, global leaders joined Gates in announcing their support for the plan, which outlines all the steps needed to achieve eradication by 2018. Tahir’s and Gates’ contributions supplemented a commitment by global leaders and other philanthropists to back the GPEI plan, with a total of $4B toward the plan’s $5.5B budget over six years.
The six-year GPEI plan simultaneously addresses the need to interrupt transmission of the wild poliovirus by the end of 2014, strengthen routine immunization, and lay the groundwork for securing a lasting polio-free world. It is estimated that GPEI could deliver net benefits of US$40-50 billion by 2035.
The Summit, held during World Immunization Week (April 24-30), was organized to continue the momentum of the Decade of Vaccines – a vision and commitment to reach all people with the vaccines they need. Critical to this vision is polio eradication, along with the development of affordable new vaccines and the ability for every country in the world to deliver vaccines to every child.

Statement by President Bill Clinton on World Malaria Day I thediplomaticsociety.asia

Statement by President Bill Clinton on World Malaria Day
Apr 25, 2013
There are an estimated 216 million cases of Malaria in the world today, and this year 655,000 people around the world will lose their lives to this infection.  More alarmingly, 86% of these deaths occur among children under the age of five. So, as we mark World Malaria Day, I hope we can honor the memory of those we’ve lost by redoubling our efforts to achieve a Malaria-free generation.
Many dedicated partners — including the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), the Gates Foundation, and the UK Department for International Development (DFID) -- have helped establish the Affordable Medicines Facility-malaria (AMFm), an innovative financing mechanism that helped significantly reduce the price of the most effective Malaria medicines, making them more affordable for more people who need them. We’ve also supported seven countries’ work on the AMFm program, reducing consumer prices for effective Malaria drugs (ACTs) by as much as 90%. In just the first year of our initiative, private and public buyers in those seven countries have ordered 140 million additional treatments—equal to nearly the entire global volume of the drugs in the previous year.

Despite significant progress, we’re far from done.  We must expand efforts to achieve maximum value for money, especially during this time of global austerity, and we also must redouble our work to help countries most affected by Malaria to become increasingly self-sufficient in their fight against infections, including through exploring new innovative funding models. Models like PEPFAR, the Global Fund, and UNITAID can serve as guides in our efforts against the disease. And, even though $1.8 billion was made available last year, that figure is far short of the estimated $5 billion required to fully control the disease worldwide. We need to be more ambitious. Millions more need and deserve care, and it’s up to us – all of us – to ensure they receive it.
