The Role of Democracy in Bhutan

His Majesty King Jigme Wangchuck emphasized the importance of people’s participation in the upcoming elections to an audience of district governors (known as dzongdas) an elected local leaders (known as gups) who are in the capital Thimphu to attend the annual dzongda and gup conferences.
While addressing the gathering of locally elected leaders and district governors at the Royal Banquet Hall in Thimphu His Majesty the King Jigme Wangchuck said.
“You will have to go back to your villages as my representatives, and encourage the people to participate fully in the democratic process and make the 2013 elections successful,”
The Bhutanese King also said that the “gups ( elected local leaders) will have to ensure that the elections do not create divisions among the people, and that communities continue to live together in harmony”.
His Majesty asked the gups or the elected local leaders to convey to the people His Majesty’s happiness and appreciation for the manner in which they have been serving the country.
His Majesty the King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was the Chief Guest at the 64th Republic Day of India celebrations in Delhi on 26 January 2013
